“Together Hand in Hand”: World Congress for Hand Surgery and Therapy will take place in Berlin in 2019
Berlin, 28.02.2019 – From 17 to 21 June 2019, the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) and the International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy (IFSHT) will be staging the international world congress for hand surgeons and hand therapists in Berlin, Germany. For the first time, the meeting will be combining the international (IFSSH & IFSHT), European (FESSH & EFSHT) and German (DGH & DAHTH) congresses for hand surgeons and therapists to form one major international event. Currently some 2,500 participants and numerous exhibitors from industry are expected. Around 260 experts were nominated for the Scientific Committee, promising a diverse and high-quality congress programme; furthermore, 1,800 submitted abstracts – a new record number – are testimony to the particular interest shown in this congress event.
Under the banner “Building Bridges – Together Hand in Hand”, the congress will bring together the multifaceted disciplines of hand surgery and therapy from all parts of the world, allowing an intensive expert dialogue between the closely-related fields of hand surgery and hand therapy. “We are convinced that this joint congress of hand surgeons and therapists will generate considerable new impetus”, says Professor Andreas Eisenschenk, member of the organization committee and president of the German Society for Hand Surgery (DGH) that is hosting the event. “Both the scientific programme and the ancillary events will provide excellent opportunities for exchange. And of course we are especially pleased to be able to invite participants to Berlin – surely one of the world’s most inspiring cities.”
The scientific programme of the five-day congress reflects the broad thematic spectrum of hand surgery. Focal topics will include keyhole surgery, for example in competitive sport, and the digital technologies that are allowing ever faster and better results to be achieved in diagnostics and therapy. In addition, the congress will aim to improve the coordination of global relief organizations for the treatment and rehabilitation of hand injuries and to address the increased digital networking of hand surgery centres in Europe.
Besides attending specialist lectures given by international experts, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of workshops and courses. This year will also feature a new format, “Educational Monday”: this is geared specifically to the next generation of hand surgeons and will focus particularly on knowledge transfer.
Stay tuned – the Congress Programme will be published by the end of February!

Abstract submission for the forthcoming IFSSH & IFSHT Congress closed on 15 October 2018, with roughly 1,800 abstracts submitted, nearly tripling the previous congress’s figure and a fantastic new record for the world’s largest meeting on hand surgery and hand therapy.
Although the scientific chairs make good time with the reviewing and session planning, the whole process will take a little while longer then originally estimated. Information on acceptance or refusal of submitted abstracts will be sent out by mid-January 2019.
It is the priority of IFSSH to make the visit of the World Congress affordable to the young and interested generation. Therefore, a new registration status for Doctors-in-training has been installed. For the reduced fee of EUR 340 in the early registration, young surgeons have the possibility to enhance their knowledge and skills during the 5-day congress in Berlin.
